ON Power’s morning event on innovation attracted a large number of guests to the company’s headquarters at Bæjarháls this week. The event was a great success and well received by attendees, showcasing a wide range of projects and new approaches to energy utilisation.
How does an idea in the energy sector become a practical solution? This question was the central theme of the event, where representatives from ON Power, Reykjavík Energy, the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office and the University of Iceland explored research, technological development and innovation from different perspectives.
Sævar Freyr Þráinsson, CEO of Reykjavík Energy, addressed guests in a video message, discussing the importance of innovation and Reykjavík Energy’s century-long pioneering spirit. Árni Hrannar Haraldsson, CEO of ON Power, then welcomed guests and spoke about innovation at the company.
Dr Ingunn Gunnarsdóttir, Innovation Leader at ON Power, outlined the company’s recently developed innovation strategy and how it will be put into practice. Eiríkur Sigurðsson, Communications Manager at the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office, discussed patents and the position of Icelandic geothermal companies in this field.
Guðjón Hugberg Björnsson, Technical Director at ON Power, gave a presentation entitled “Brightening Bæjarháls after a Cloudy Summer”, while Dr Sigrún Nanna Karlsdóttir, Professor at the University of Iceland, discussed materials research and innovation in geothermal utilisation. Sigurður Hafsteinn Markússon, Deep Geothermal Utilisation Lead at Reykjavík Energy, also offered insights into the potential of energy production from superhot geothermal resources.
New solutions and environmental initiatives
Guests also discovered how ON Power puts innovation into practice. Examples included rock-filled mesh rolls and moss slurry used in land restoration projects, the Ultrasonic cleaning project, which uses high-frequency sound waves to combat scaling in heat exchangers, and the Steingerður gas capture facility at Hellisheiði Power Plant. These projects demonstrate how research and technological development can deliver tangible operational results and support more responsible resource utilisation.
The strong turnout and positive feedback reflected a keen interest in innovation within Iceland’s energy sector. ON Power warmly thanks all guests and speakers for their participation and for an enjoyable morning.
