The world’s largest carbon-capture plant, Mammoth by Swiss company Climeworks, has begun operations in ON’s Geothermal Park at Hellisheiði. Mammoth can capture up to 36,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year directly from the air. It joins the existing Orca facility, making it roughly ten times larger.
Climeworks partners with Carbfix to inject and permanently mineralize the CO₂ underground. Their goal is to remove the amount of carbon scientists deem necessary to meet global climate targets while dramatically reducing greenhouse-gas emissions.
ON POWER and Climeworks have enjoyed a strong partnership since Climeworks began operations in 2017 at the Geothermal Park. Mammoth significantly expands that effort aligning with the Geothermal Park’s mission to support pioneering companies and responsibly leverage Hellisheiði plant outputs.
ON POWER has already reduced Hellisheiði’s CO₂ emissions substantially through capture and storage with Carbfix, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2025.
