Samorka’s innovation forum, Ingenuity – Circularity – Impact, was held on November 6th and showcased a wide range of projects currently shaping innovation in the energy and utilities sector. The event made clear that the industry is experiencing significant momentum and that opportunities for further development are substantial.
Ingunn Gunnarsdóttir, Leader of Innovation at ON Power, delivered a presentation on innovation within ON and introduced Glóð, a planned hub for innovation and geothermal knowledge to be established in the Geothermal Park at Hellisheiði Power Plant. Glóð is envisioned as a platform for research, development, and collaboration where science, technology, and industry intersect, with the aim of accelerating the adoption of sustainable solutions and strengthening geothermal utilization. Ingunn’s talk underscored how ON is working systematically to shape a new future for geothermal use, built on resource cascade utilization, sustainability, and knowledge sharing.
Other speakers included Daði Þorsteinn Sveinbjörnsson from Landsvirkjun, who discussed the future of the energy transition and battery development; Nína Lea Z. Jónsdóttir from Landsnet, who presented the evolution of a smart electricity grid in Iceland; and Eiríkur Sigurðsson from the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office, who shared findings from a recent report highlighting the lack of patent applications related to geothermal and renewable energy from Icelandic companies.
Ingunn also emphasized how ON Power has taken a leading role in the development of charging infrastructure, a key component of the energy transition, aligning closely with Daði’s insights on the future of the energy transition. She presented how ON is already implementing the next phase of infrastructure, supporting both individual users and heavy transport. The presentation showed clearly the company’s deliberate path toward a more sustainable energy future, with Glóð as a cornerstone for continued innovation and collaboration.
During the forum, Samorka also presented its annual innovation award, which this year went to SnerpaPower for a software solution that helps major electricity users reduce costs, minimize waste, and increase flexibility in the power system.
