ON and KLAK Join Forces to Drive Green Innovation

ON Power and KLAK Icelandic Startups have entered into a collaboration focused on innovation, with an emphasis on sustainable resource utilization, environmental protection, and the energy transition.

The first step in this partnership was a visit from startups participating in Hringiða, KLAK’s business accelerator for green solutions, to ON Power’s facilities at Hellisheiði Power Plant.

During the visit, Ingunn Gunnarsdóttir, Leader of Innovation at ON, introduced the company’s operations, with particular focus on the opportunities within the Geothermal Park and Glóð, the planned center for innovation. She highlighted how ON Power is actively creating a platform for innovation connected to geothermal utilization.

Salka Kolbeinsdóttir from Carbfix also gave a presentation on Carbfix and guided the group on a field visit to a borehole.

The visit sparked strong interest among participants in Hringiða. Representatives from KLAK see clear potential for startups to further evolve within the Glóð and Geothermal Park environment, where unique opportunities exist to test and develop solutions.

The collaboration between KLAK and ON Power was recently formalized by Ásta Sóllilja Guðmundsdóttir, CEO of KLAK, and Ingunn Gunnarsdóttir, Leader of Innovation at ON Power. The partnership includes the development of joint projects as well as mutual support for each organization’s initiatives.

It will focus, among other things, on connecting entrepreneurs with opportunities within ON Power’s operations, including Glóð and the Geothermal Park, while also opening access to the platform and KLAK’s support. The partners will also work together to identify opportunities in both domestic and international innovation projects, support the development of a strong startup ecosystem in Iceland, and contribute to projects that promote a sustainable future.

“Our collaboration with ON Power is an important step in strengthening innovation in sustainability and energy transition in Iceland. By connecting entrepreneurs with the Geothermal Park and Glóð, we create real opportunities to develop solutions with global impact,” said Ásta Sóllilja.

Ingunn added that the partnership with KLAK is a key step in strengthening the entrepreneurial community around Glóð and the Geothermal Park. “By joining forces, we can better support the development of new projects and create a stronger pathway for innovation and solutions that contribute to a sustainable future,” Ingunn said.

It will be exciting to follow the growth of this collaboration and the projects that will emerge from it in the coming months.
