Important Collaboration in Knowledge Transfer, Research and Innovation

ON Power and GRÓ – Geothermal Training Programme (GTP) are now collaborating on knowledge transfer, research, and innovation in the fields of geothermal energy, sustainable resource utilization, and environmental protection.

The GTP is one of four programmes under GRÓ – Centre for Capacity Development, Sustainability and Societal Change, which is under the auspices of UNESCO, and is a government agency within the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Among the objectives of the collaboration between ON and GRÓ is to introduce students of the GTP to ON’s activities and the Geothermal Park, including through visits to the Geothermal Park or ON’s Geothermal Exhibition. The partners will also assess whether Master’s or PhD projects within the GTP could be based at Glóð, an innovation hub currently being developed within the Geothermal Park, which will provide facilities for geothermal-related research and innovation.

The collaboration with the GTP is an important step toward establishing Glóð as a global centre of expertise in geothermal energy and a hub for innovation.

“We at the GTP look forward to this collaboration and are convinced that it will strengthen our work just as much as the activities at Glóð. The cooperation will primarily take the form of knowledge transfer, research, and innovation,” says Bjarni Richter, Director of the GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme.

Ingunn Gunnarsdóttir, Innovation Leader at ON, echoes this sentiment and says she is proud to participate in GRÓ’s work, which, for decades, has been a leading force in capacity building in the field of geothermal energy. “At ON, we look forward to learning from the extensive experience of the GRÓ team and to becoming part of the network they have built. This collaboration is important for Glóð and will undoubtedly help enhance its position as an international centre of geothermal expertise.”
