Rock Rolls at Hellisheiði

Significant construction work has been underway near ON Power’s Hellisheiði Power Plant in recent weeks, as efforts are being made to relocate a stream that runs through the area to a more suitable path. Over the years, the natural course of the stream has been altered, and due to surrounding infrastructure, the water has not been able to flow properly through the site. As a result, it has accumulated and caused flooding in ON’s Geothermal Park.

This is the first time a project of this type has been undertaken in Iceland, and therefore specialists in nature-based solutions from Scotland were brought in to demonstrate best practices and help design the new stream channel.

In the accompanying video, Magnea Magnúsdóttir, ON Power’s Director of Environment and Land Restoration, and Dr. Hamish Moir, a specialist in river restoration, describe this fascinating innovation project — including how they used so-called rock rolls.

It is fitting that this innovative project is taking place within the Geothermal Park, where the new innovation hub Glóð is planned to be built.
