Innovation Does Not Thrive in Uncertainty

Orka náttúrunnar (ON Power) views innovation as a key driver in ensuring sustainable operations, technological leadership and long-term resilience for the benefit of customers, society and the environment. Research and innovation are at the core of the company’s development, supporting its strategy of responsible resource utilization, sustainability and long-term value creation.

These themes are at the heart of a recent opinion piece by Ingunn Gunnarsdóttir, Head of Innovation at ON Power, titled “Innovation Does Not Thrive in Uncertainty,” published on Vísir. In the article, Ingunn highlights that innovation depends on courage, investment and long-term thinking, but can be hindered by an unpredictable operating environment. She emphasizes the importance of clear rules and stability to enable new ideas to evolve into tangible solutions.

To maintain Iceland’s leading position in renewable energy and the development of new solutions, Ingunn stresses the need to create conditions where innovation can flourish. Achieving this requires a careful balance between regulation, incentives and long-term policy.

Her article contributes to an important ongoing discussion about the future of innovation in Iceland, underlining that clarity and stability are essential for turning ideas into reality.

“Innovation does not need praise in words, but trust in action. It requires clear signals, a predictable framework and an environment that encourages people and companies to develop, test and build. The task is clear: to ensure that regulation and public implementation support innovation through transparency, consistency and predictability.”

Ingunn will also participate in Iceland Innovation Week, speaking at the event “Building Together – Innovation Ecosystems in Energy, Food & Climate” taking place at Austurbær. The session will highlight collaboration within the Geothermal Park, including companies such as Climeworks, VAXA Technologies and Carbfix, and explore how innovation ecosystems can accelerate sustainable solutions.
